The work is inspired by near death experience (NDE) that the artist had when he was a teen during a coma. The NDE indicates the immaterial existence of a mind or soul, which leaves the body upon death. The NDE provides information about an immaterial world to where the soul goes upon ending its physical existence on earth.
NDEs are a recognized part of an afterlife by some transcendental and religious beliefs. Neuroscience research suggests that a NDE is a subjective phenomenon resulting from "disturbed bodily multi-sensory integration" that occurs during life-threatening events. The installation presents a portal with white light in a vast space. Once passing towards the portal, the viewer would see a subliminal or after image of “Life” flashing before the viewers’ eyes from the other side of portal.
A digital persistent of vision technique is used to project a full resolution image with the limited pixel count in the physical piece. The effect is project into the human visual system and with the rapid motion of eye ball or head movements, the image would reveal itself in the “mind’s eye”.
